JANUARY 23 – EXPLORING SANTIAGO DE CUBA

  • Breakfast in hotel
  • Visit to Parque Céspedes, Santiago's main town square
  • Visit the Cathedral, built in 1522, where the remains of Diego Velázquez are buried
  • Visit the Ayuntamiento (City Hall). Fidel Castro gave his victory speech from its balcony on January 1, 1959.
  • Visit the oldest house in Cuba, today Museo de Ambiente Histórico Colonial andformerly the residence of Diego Velázquez.
  • While touring environs by bus, we’ll see the Teatro Heredia, San Juan Hill, Plaza de La Revolución Antonio Maceo, Saturnino Lora baseball stadium, Moncada Barracks, Palacio de Justicia, and other key sights.
  • Lunch at Zunzún Restaurant, included
  • Afternoon visit to Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Cobre. This is the country’s most sacred pilgrimage site since the Virgin of Charity is the patron saint of Cuba. In the Afrocuban religion she is associated with Ochun, the Yoruba goddess of love.
